{"id":134047,"date":"2023-10-09T13:36:34","date_gmt":"2023-10-09T13:36:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yogaesoteric.net\/?p=134047"},"modified":"2023-10-09T13:36:34","modified_gmt":"2023-10-09T13:36:34","slug":"oxygen-28-may-challenge-a-fundamental-law-of-physics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yogaesoteric.net\/en\/oxygen-28-may-challenge-a-fundamental-law-of-physics\/","title":{"rendered":"Oxygen-28 May Challenge A Fundamental Law Of Physics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>After scientists created oxygen-28 in the lab, it almost immediately degraded, baffling physicists around the world<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-134048\" src=\"https:\/\/yogaesoteric.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/1-32-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/yogaesoteric.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/1-32-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/yogaesoteric.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/1-32.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For the first time, scientists have created oxygen-28, a rare oxygen isotope that has 12 more neutrons than oxygen-16, the most common form of oxygen on the planet.<\/p>\n<p>This newly created \u201cheavy\u201d oxygen isotope has the highest number of neutrons ever seen in an oxygen atom and was expected to be ultrastable and last virtually forever.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, however, it degraded amazingly quickly \u2014 a finding that challenges our understanding of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/48575-strong-force.html#section-the-strong-force-in-the-standard-model\">strong nuclear force<\/a>, which binds the fundamental particles of matter, such as protons and neutrons, to form larger particles in an atom\u2019s nucleus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>It opens a very, very big fundamental question about nature\u2019s strongest interaction, the nuclear strong force<\/em>,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ap.smu.ca\/~rkanungo\/rkanungo.html\">Rituparna Kanungo<\/a>, a physicist at Saint Mary\u2019s University in Canada who was not involved with the experiment, <a href=\"https:\/\/go.redirectingat.com\/?id=92X1590019&amp;xcust=livescience_gb_3963411285414508500&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.newscientist.com%2Farticle%2F2389737-super-heavy-oxygen-hints-at-problem-with-the-laws-of-physics%2F%3F_ptid%3D%257Bkpdx%257DAAAA2FqrDQryhAoKcmJhNGYxWmNwZRIQbG0wc3UyYnRrcTNjbmw0dBoMRVhMRlE5SEFCMVVTIiUxODIzcjE4MDdjLTAwMDAzMmloaDZrYzVwN2V1bXFwYmh1M3Q4KhtzaG93VGVtcGxhdGU2UUVVVDNZTkE0UEszTEswAToMT1RDTzJDNlc2NEhGQg1PVFZYRFdHTkwwVDdPUhJ2LYUA8DBjOWRwcXd4cnJiWiQyNjAxOjgwOjQ2MDI6YTlkMDpjOTA5OmM3MTk6YTQ3Yzo1MWJiA2RtY2jCwM2nBnALeAQ&amp;sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.livescience.com%2Fphysics-mathematics%2Fdoubly-magic-form-of-oxygen-may-challenge-a-fundamental-law-of-physics\">told <em>New Scientist<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To create oxygen-28, a team led by researchers at the Tokyo Institute of Technology blasted a beam of fluorine-29 \u2014 an isotope that has nine protons \u2014 at a liquid-hydrogen target at the Riken RI Beam Factory in Wako, Japan.<\/p>\n<p>Upon impact, both the hydrogen and the fluorine-29 lost a proton, which created an entirely new molecule of oxygen-28, according to the study, published Aug. 30 in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/go.redirectingat.com\/?id=92X1590019&amp;xcust=livescience_gb_1240373745707070200&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nature.com%2Farticles%2Fs41586-023-06352-6%3Futm_medium%3Daffiliate%26utm_source%3Dcommission_junction%26utm_campaign%3DCONR_PF018_ECOM_GL_PHSS_ALWYS_DEEPLINK%26utm_content%3Dtextlink%26utm_term%3DPID100052172%26CJEVENT%3D86704c2248dc11ee83aaa6b70a82b836&amp;sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.livescience.com%2Fphysics-mathematics%2Fdoubly-magic-form-of-oxygen-may-challenge-a-fundamental-law-of-physics\"><em>Nature<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/the-standard-model\">Standard Model<\/a>, the leading theory of particle physics, particles should be stable if the shells in an atom\u2019s nucleus are filled with certain numbers of protons and neutrons that are known as \u201cmagic\u201d numbers.<\/p>\n<p>Oxygen-28 contains 20 neutrons and eight protons, both of which are magic numbers, suggesting that the molecule should have been supremely stable or \u201cdoubly magic.\u201d But that was not the case.<\/p>\n<p>During the experiment, the oxygen-28 molecule decayed within a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/zeptosecond-shortest-time-unit-measured.html\">zeptosecond<\/a>, or a trillionth of a billionth of a second. In fact, its presence was only confirmed by the products it left behind when it decayed: oxygen-24 and four neutrons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>I was surprised<\/em>,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/be.nucl.ap.titech.ac.jp\/~nakamura\/\">Takashi Nakamura<\/a>, a physicist at the Tokyo Institute of Technology and co-author of the study, <a href=\"https:\/\/go.redirectingat.com\/?id=92X1590019&amp;xcust=livescience_gb_3681002012504951300&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nature.com%2Farticles%2Fd41586-023-02713-3&amp;sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.livescience.com%2Fphysics-mathematics%2Fdoubly-magic-form-of-oxygen-may-challenge-a-fundamental-law-of-physics\">told <em>Nature<\/em><\/a>. \u201c<em>Personally, I thought it was doubly magic. But this is what nature says<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though the experiment has not yet been replicated, the findings of this study suggest that the current list of magic numbers may not tell the full story of whether molecules are stable.<\/p>\n<p>In a separate case, <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.aps.org\/prl\/abstract\/10.1103\/PhysRevLett.102.152501\">scientists in 2009<\/a> showed that an oxygen-24 isotope behaved as though it were doubly magic, even though it did <em>not <\/em>have a magic number of protons and neutrons.<\/p>\n<p>The new study could pave the way for future research that may provide more clues about the mysterious forces gluing particles together in an atom\u2019s nucleus, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/msu.edu\/honoredfaculty\/directory\/thoennessen-r-michael.html\">Michael Thoennessen<\/a>, a professor of physics at Michigan State University and co-author of the study.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>I think the results of the experiments demonstrate the importance of studying these exotic nuclei along and beyond the limit of existence<\/em>,\u201d he told <em>Live Science<\/em> in an email.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>We still do not fully know what binds neutrons and protons together to form nuclei.
