This covert propaganda campaign, deployed during the pandemic, reveals the state\u2019s deliberate manipulation of popular media to shape public behaviour.<\/p>\n

The FOI disclosures confirm long-held suspicions about government influence over British media, sparking urgent concerns about the extent of state control and ethical boundaries. By embedding vaccine messaging in beloved soaps under the guise of public health, officials sought to sway public opinion and compliance, raising questions about the manipulation of thought and trust in media.<\/p>\n

The findings echo May 2021 revelations<\/a> that scientists on the UK government\u2019s behavioural advisory committee admitted they used fear-based \u201ctotalitarian<\/em>\u201d tactics to control public behaviour during covid pandemic, describing the approach as \u201cunethical<\/em>,\u201d \u201cdystopian<\/em>,\u201d and a form of \u201cconsciousness control<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

They also mirror an October 2024 U.S. House investigation that found<\/a> the CDC and Biden administration used a $900 million covid campaign to \u201cmanipulate Americans<\/em>\u201d with \u201cdeeply flawed<\/em>\u201d messaging, \u201coverpromising<\/em>\u201d vaccines \u201cwithout evidence<\/em>,\u201d and funding Big Tech companies to \u201ctrack and monitor Americans<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n

What other views and choices are being shaped today by government-scripted entertainment?<\/p>\n

Ministers Pushed BBC & ITV to Insert Vaccine Storylines<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cMinisters met television bosses during the pandemic to persuade them to push pro-vaccine storylines in soaps such as <\/em>EastEnders and <\/em>Coronation Street, it has emerged<\/em>,\u201d The Telegraph<\/em><\/a> reported recently.<\/p>\n

The effort was led by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), which held secret meetings with ITV<\/em>, BBC<\/em>, Channel 4<\/em> and others to coordinate \u201cnational unity programming<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

FOI documents show broadcasters were asked: \u201cif there were plans to introduce health messages into soap stories<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

BBC<\/em> committed to \u201creport back on other shows<\/em>\u201d while ITV responded that \u201cfilming had now ceased<\/em>,\u201d but that \u201cITV have included voiceovers to episodes now to clarify govt messaging on social distancing<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Early Meetings with ITV in February 2020<\/strong><\/p>\n

Redacted records show that as early as Feb. 2, 2020 \u2013 more than a month before lockdown \u2013 officials met ITV<\/em> chief Dame Carolyn McCall to \u201ctest the possibility<\/em>\u201d of inserting pro-vaccine messaging.<\/p>\n

The government briefing stated:<\/p>\n

\u201cSince that meeting <\/em>ITV have noticeably increased their engagement across DCMS and Whitehall; and recently officials at the Department of Health have been in touch with DCMS about potential assistance from <\/em>ITV in relation to pro vaccine messaging. This meeting may offer an opportunity to test the possibility of this with them<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Health Department Wanted Letters to Broadcasters<\/strong><\/p>\n

Documents confirm the Department of Health wanted to write directly to ITV<\/em> to \u201cinclude vaccine storylines in their soaps<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

But DCMS advised against it:<\/p>\n

\u201cWhilst we do not think it would be appropriate to write to <\/em>ITV on this matter given the importance of broadcasters\u2019 operational and editorial independence, you may wish to explore with them whether they already have plans to develop content related to this area.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

Officials also noted ITV was \u201cplanning soap storylines related to the environment and climate change and therefore they may be amenable to the idea of something similar in relation to vaccine messaging<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

BBC & Channel 4 Also Involved<\/strong><\/p>\n

In March and April 2020, then-Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden and then-Media Minister John Whittingdale met with BBC<\/em> Director-General Tony Hall, ITV<\/em>\u2019s Dame Carolyn McCall, and Channel 4<\/em> CEO Alex Mahon.<\/p>\n

Channel 4<\/em> agreed it would \u201creinforce Public Health England guidance<\/em>\u201d and target younger viewers through YouTube.<\/p>\n

Mahon told officials:<\/p>\n

\u201cAM said they will consider how to spread message through YouTube excerpts of news programmes (<\/em>C4\u2019s YouTube channel has attracted 100 million views) and through social media. Also <\/em>C4 is considering filming broadcast messages from hosts and talent to reinforce messaging.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

Pro-Vaccine Propaganda Aired on EastEnders<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cPro-vaccine messaging did end up in soaps.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

In a 2021 episode of EastEnders<\/em>: \u201cPatrick Trueman told Suki Panesar he felt like he had \u2018won the lottery\u2019 after getting his second vaccination<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

During the same scene: \u201cKaren Taylor was accused of being an \u2018anti-vaxxer\u2019 for worrying that they had developed the vaccine too quickly<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Critics Blast State Interference in British Media<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sir David Davis MP condemned the effort:<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat this demonstrates is that during covid, the government reduced the broadcasters to mere arms of the state.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe state should never resort to underhanded propaganda of this nature.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

Lord Frost added:<\/p>\n

\u201cIf, as it seems, the government quietly worked behind the scenes with major broadcasters to shape opinions and compliance on their draconian covid measures, this is extremely worrying<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cActions like this blur the boundary between government, civil society, and private life. They risk undermining confidence in government messaging in the future, and border on the unethical in a free society<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Injuries Acknowledged but Concerns Suppressed<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cMore than 17,500 Britons have applied to the Government\u2019s vaccine damage payment scheme (VDPS) believing they or loved ones were injured by the jab.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMost of the successful vaccine harm claims relate to the AstraZeneca jab, which was found to cause vaccine-induced thrombocytopenia and thrombosis, a dangerous type of blood clotting which can be fatal.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

Dodsworth: \u2018That\u2019s Not Public Health, It\u2019s Propaganda\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

Author Laura Dodsworth said:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe government was in close contact with broadcasters to ensure the \u2018right\u2019 messages made it into entertainment \u2013 that\u2019s not public health, it\u2019s propaganda<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTake <\/em>EastEnders. Patrick and Suki dutifully pushed the jab, while Karen voiced concerns and was ridiculed for this reason. It was heavy-handed, awkward and divisive. Propaganda often works by polarisation: creating in-groups and out-groups to shut down debate. There\u2019s a word for this: manipulation<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Academics & Campaigners Warn of Collusion<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dr. Colin Alexander of Nottingham Trent University stated:<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat the FOI request information thus confirms is that broadcasters relinquished their primary democratic role of holding the powerful to account and instead became collusive with the official narrative.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis at a time when scrutiny and investigation ought to have been at its highest.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

Molly Kingsley of UsForThem added:<\/p>\n

\u201cThis kind of brazen state interference with British media crosses multiple red lines.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt indicates that the state-led pandemic censorship operation extended beyond \u2018merely\u2019 virtual communication networks, and it raises serious questions about the integrity of messages broadcast to the public during the pandemic.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

ITV & BBC Respond<\/strong><\/p>\n

ITV<\/em> said:<\/p>\n

\u201cAll of this was entirely editorially independent of the Government and any other body or interest group<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

A BBC<\/em> spokesman said:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe <\/em>BBC is independent and makes its own editorial decisions. This does not mean that we cannot meet representatives from the government or from political parties, and, like other broadcasters, we do so.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018We\u2019re Being Entertained Into Compliance\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dodsworth concluded:<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a growing trend of public policy delivered through storylines \u2013 we\u2019re being entertained into compliance. What better to wash your brain with than with a soap?<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n
