In a dramatic escalation of rhetoric, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk declared the Russia-Ukraine conflict \u201cour war<\/em>\u201d at the Warsaw Security Forum on Monday, Sept. 29.<\/p>\n

The geopolitical stakes are compounded by military realities. Poland, now pursuing a \u201clarge-scale modernization<\/em>\u201d of its armed forces, exemplifies Europe’s scramble to rearm amid fears of a protracted conflict.<\/p>\n

Yet doubts persist about NATO\u2019s readiness, particularly after U.S. President Donald Trump endorsed shooting down Russian aircraft in allied airspace \u2013 a move that risks direct escalation. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s push for high school firearms training underscores the war’s societal toll \u2013 with Ukraine losing an estimated one-and-a-half generations of fighting-age men.<\/p>\n

As Tusk rallies Europe against what he calls a \u201cnew type of war<\/em>,\u201d the continent faces a paradox.
