However, Salerno argues that historical documents from the centuries after Michelangelo’s death already recognize the statue as his work.

In her research, Valentina Salerno also suggests that before his death in 1564, Michelangelo bequeathed many of his works to his students and close associates. According to her, archival documents show that some of his students and heirs entered into an agreement to protect and preserve the works after his death.

Salerno also mentioned the existence of a secret room in the Vatican, a building Michelangelo himself worked on, used to store these works. According to the description, the room had three locks and could only be opened when three keys were used simultaneously, owned by three different students. It is believed that there are 20 more works in this secret room in the Vatican, which also belong to Michelangelo.

However, Valentina Salerno’s statement has made some Renaissance experts cautious. Many prominent scholars have declined to comment until there is an official scientific assessment.

Art history professor William Wallace (Washington University in St. Louis) believes that Salerno’s method of document research is reasonable, but the conclusions require further verification.

He also expressed scepticism about the theory that many other works by Michelangelo remain undiscovered. According to him, in his last years, Michelangelo mainly supervised large architectural projects in Rome and did not create many new sculptures.

Researcher Valentina Salerno says it is now the turn of experts to pronounce, after examining the bust. One of Michelangelo’s most famous sculptures, the Pietà (Madonna della Pietà), made between 1498-1499 in Carrara marble, with Jesus in the arms of the Virgin Mary on Golgotha, is currently exhibited in St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City.

yogaesoteric
April 9, 2026

An Italian researcher – an art historian – claims that a bust of Jesus from a church in Rome is the work of the renowned artist Michelangelo.
