Following the pandemic, the war in Ukraine, the energy crisis, and trade conflicts, another shock had now been added: the military conflict surrounding the Strait of Hormuz \u2013 the world&#8217;s most important energy artery.<\/p>\n<p>For Europe, this means nothing less than the end of old certainties.<\/p>\n<p><strong>13 million barrels per day are missing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to Lagarde, the current shortfall amounts to approximately: 13 percent of global consumption.<\/p>\n<p>This number alone shows the scale: This is not about normal market movements, but about a global disruption with immediate consequences for prices, industry and supply.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kerosene consumption has doubled \u2013 airports are already rationing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Particularly explosive: Lagarde confirmed that kerosene prices have roughly doubled since the outbreak of the conflict.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, rationing is already in place at some European airports.<\/p>\n<p>This means: The crisis is no longer theoretical. It has arrived operationally \u2013 right in the heart of Europe.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Food poisoning threatens<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The ECB chief pointed to three particularly critical supply chains:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Approximately one-third of global fertilizer shipments pass through Hormuz.<\/li>\n<li>Approximately one third of the world&#8217;s helium comes from the Gulf region.<\/li>\n<li>Almost one-fifth of methanol production is at risk<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This affects agriculture, chemicals, semiconductors and industry simultaneously.<\/p>\n<p>Less fertilizer means lower harvests later. Fewer chemical raw materials mean production problems. Less helium affects high-tech and medical technology.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Inflation could return brutally<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lagarde made it clear what citizens respond to most strongly:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Food prices<\/li>\n<li>Petrol prices<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If both rise simultaneously, a new wave of inflation threatens \u2013 even if inflation had recently fallen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Political bombshell: \u201cAllies disappear\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Her geopolitical words were the sharpest:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The certainties of the past are vanishing.<\/li>\n<li>Allies are disappearing.<\/li>\n<li>Friends could be enemies.<\/li>\n<li>Enemies could be friends.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That is an interesting formulation for an ECB president \u2013 and an indication of how deep the uncertainty now runs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Warning to governments<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lagarde also spoke out against knee-jerk crisis aid. States can no longer cushion every shock for every citizen. Their financial leeway is shrinking.<\/p>\n<p>Those who subsidize everything endanger public finances in the long term.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Europe&#8217;s last answer: Stand together or lose<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lagarde called for a more integrated Europe:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>common internal market<\/li>\n<li>deep capital market<\/li>\n<li>investments of European savings in Europe<\/li>\n<li>economic independence<\/li>\n<li>strategic sovereignty<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Christine Lagarde did not speak like a typical central banker.
