<\/a>Officially, the government is selling<\/a> the measure as protection against youth crime and gang recruitment. In reality, however, it marks a further step towards a preventive control society: young people aged 13 and over are to be monitored with electronic ankle bracelets or smartwatch-like devices if authorities classify them as \u201cat risk<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\nSweden is thus crossing a line that would have been considered dystopian just a few years ago. It’s no longer just convicted criminals who are subjected to constant digital surveillance \u2013 but also children on suspicion.<\/p>\n
The social context is particularly significant. Sweden is among the countries with the highest prevalence of voluntary microchip implants worldwide. Thousands of people already use implanted chips for access systems, payments, or digital identification. What once began as a futuristic novelty is increasingly becoming the cultural normalization of technology worn close to the body.<\/p>\n
Now comes the next step: the combination of biometric identity, real-time surveillance, and state control.<\/p>\n
The government argues that it has to combat exploding gang crime. But instead of tackling the root causes of social violence \u2013 parallel societies, failed integration policies, drug markets, and social decay \u2013 Stockholm is relying on technology, tracking, and control.<\/p>\n

And therein lies the real danger. For as soon as a society accepts that children may be digitally tracked on a permanent basis, the boundaries of what is conceivable shift dramatically. What begins today with \u201cat-risk youth<\/em>\u201d can be extended tomorrow to other groups: demonstrators, activists, the psychically ill, or political dissidents. The history of state surveillance repeatedly shows the same pattern: states of emergency become permanent.<\/p>\n Added to this is the psychological dimension. A generation is growing up that is supposed to learn that constant surveillance is normal. That movement profiles, digital control, and real-time tracking are part of everyday life. That freedom is only granted conditionally.<\/p>\n Sweden is thus becoming a laboratory for the future of Europe.<\/p>\n Because at the same time, the country is already tightening its online surveillance, expanding police powers, and lowering the threshold for preventative interventions. The electronic monitoring of children should not be viewed in isolation, but rather as part of a larger development: the merging of social policy, the security apparatus, and digital control.<\/p>\n The central question is therefore no longer whether these technologies are technically feasible. Rather, it is how far Western societies are prepared to go before they realize that security policy is gradually changing the foundations of a free society.<\/p>\n The country, which accustomed its population to digital identity and wearable technology early on, is now beginning to electronically monitor children.
