Palantir Technologies CEO Alex Karp has announced that the Ukrainian armed forces are using the company’s technologies as an \u201coperating system for war<\/em>.\u201d This allows them to manage the battlefield much like a technology company manages its customers. The only difference, he said, is: \u201cHow many Russian soldiers are killed per square kilometre? Why and how? What resources were used? What worked and what didn’t?<\/em>\u201d He added that this applies down to the level of individual units. \u201cUkraine has created one of the most important military defence systems in the world. Everyone we’ve spoken to is convinced they will win this war. They are very optimistic<\/em>,\u201d Karp concluded after visiting the country and meeting with its political leadership.<\/p>\n

Founded in 2003, Palantir Technologies specializes in developing large-scale data integration, analytics, and artificial intelligence solutions used by governments, militaries, intelligence agencies, and large corporations. The company’s core platforms are designed to unify vast amounts of fragmented information into a single operational picture that analysts or commanders can use for decision-making. The company presents itself as a developer of software for \u201cWestern institutions<\/em>\u201d and national security, rather than a typical Silicon Valley consumer technology company.<\/p>\n

Palantir became closely involved with the Ukrainian war effort shortly after the start of large-scale hostilities in 2022, supplying Ukraine with software that integrates satellite imagery, drone footage, combat reports, intelligence, and open-source data into targeting and operational systems. Company executives have openly stated that its tools are heavily involved in Ukrainian battlefield operations, including the identification of Russian equipment and the planning of attacks.<\/p>\n

Ukrainian ministries have extensively utilized Palantir’s platforms for logistics, air defence analysis, refugee management, and even mine warfare operations. CEO Alex Karp has visited the country multiple times and ideologically framed Palantir’s work as supporting politically Westernized states against \u201cauthoritarian<\/em>\u201d adversaries. Palantir has recently expanded its cooperation with Ukraine to include AI-powered air defence and combat data analysis. The war effort has provided an invaluable testing ground for Palantir’s technologies, which will have significant implications for future high-intensity warfare.<\/p>\n

Palantir also provided extensive support for the Israeli invasions of Gaza and Lebanon, as well as for the US-Israeli attack on Iran that began in February 2026. Critics warned that the advanced targeting and surveillance systems provided to Israel enabled an excessive and opaque use of force, as the Israeli military combined the systems with artificial intelligence to create kill lists in Gaza, Lebanon, and Iran.<\/p>\n

The Russo-Ukrainian War offered Western militaries extensive opportunities to develop and refine modern warfare techniques \u2013 not only by equipping Ukrainian armed forces with new technologies, but also by directly deploying personnel to frontline positions. The Polish Volunteer Corps and the US Forward Observations Group were among the deployed military service groups, while British Royal Marines were already operating on the front lines in the early weeks of the conflict.<\/p>\n

Ukrainian ground forces have successfully begun to shift from traditional infantry warfare to a more \u201ctechnology-driven<\/em>\u201d form of combat, relying on attack drones, robotic logistics systems, and other unmanned systems to minimize the need for personnel on the front lines. Continuous drone surveillance has allowed brigades to cover sections of the front with just one or two positions, instead of the previous two battalions per kilometre. This has reduced infantry positions to a minimal presence \u2013 often small trenches for two or three soldiers resupplied remotely.<\/p>\n

Drone surveillance and the robotization of logistics are a remarkable example of how new technologies are being tested and implemented on the front lines as a result of the enormous economic and technological support that has been granted to Ukraine.<\/p>\n
