In the US alone, hundreds of new facilities are under construction or in the planning stages. Operators talk of an AI revolution, cloud computing, and the future of the digital economy. But many people are now asking themselves: What is this gigantic computing power actually needed for?

For the average user, AI often appears to be merely an improved search engine or a tool for creating images and text. At the same time, these new data centres consume enormous amounts of electricity and water – sometimes as much as entire cities. While citizens are urged to conserve energy and climate policy demands increasingly stringent restrictions, the massive energy consumption of these facilities suddenly seems to be no longer a problem.

The technocratic vision behind the expansion

There is more to the development of infrastructure than just economic progress. Many of the underlying concepts stem from long-term technocratic models of the future that have been discussed for years by international organizations, think tanks, and technology companies.

While terms like “Agenda 2030,” “Smart Cities,” “sustainable development,” and “digital transformation” may have been less prominent recently, they have by no means lost their significance. Instead, these goals are now being pursued under the guise of AI, national security, and technological competitiveness.

What are digital twins?

A central concept is the so-called “Digital Twin”. These are virtual representations of real objects, systems, or even people. These digital copies are fed with real-time data and enable simulations, predictions, and analyses.

Digital twins are already being used in many areas today:

Aircraft engines are digitally monitored to predict maintenance needs.

Cities simulate traffic flows and infrastructure.

Formula 1 teams test vehicles in virtual racing simulations.

Doctors create digital models of organs to simulate therapies.

Officially, digital twins are considered a helpful technology for increasing efficiency and improving planning. However, the same technology could also be used for comprehensive surveillance and societal control.

The vision of a fully digitized society

The AI elites refer to concepts such as “Biodigital Convergence” or futuristic scenarios in which people exist physically, but their actual interaction increasingly takes place digitally.

Future scenarios are being discussed in which:

People meet via holograms,

Virtual realities are superimposed on the physical world,

Biometric data are constantly monitored

AI systems analyse and predict human behaviour in real time.

Particular emphasis is placed on the idea of a global digital control system that could analyse virtually every movement, transaction, and social interaction using artificial intelligence.

Fujitsu and the “Social Digital Twin”

A video from the Japanese corporation Fujitsu begs our attention. There, the company describes the so-called “Social Digital Twin” – a system that combines vast amounts of real-time data from traffic, weather, infrastructure, behaviour, and social activities to digitally map entire societies. According to Fujitsu, the goal is to simulate political decisions and social processes in a virtual environment in advance.

Officially, such systems are supposed to:

Better management of natural disasters,

Solving traffic problems

Reduce CO₂

Making cities more efficient.

However, the critics raises the question of what occurs when the same infrastructure ends up in the hands of authoritarian governments or powerful corporations.

Singapore, China and Europe’s digital cities

There are numerous real-world projects worldwide:

Singapore

The “Virtual Singapore” project is considered one of the most advanced national digital twins. It integrates data on buildings, infrastructure, population movements, and urban systems in real time.

China

Several Chinese cities are already using digital twin systems with live monitoring feeds for police and security authorities. With the help of AI, a global digital copy of the physical world could be created.

This is a crucial indication of where technological development could actually lead.

The digital profile of the person

Introducing the concept of the personal digital twin.
