This could mark the first time a leading NATO power has taken the step towards autonomous killing systems.

The red line is being moved

Until now, the official principle was “Human in the Loop” – a human being needs to ultimately decide whether a target is attacked.

But now parts of the British military are demanding more leeway for autonomous systems. Defence Minister Al Carns openly stated that it was essential to have the option of “taking humans out of the loop if necessary,” since adversaries like Russia or China did not adhere to the same restrictions.

The reasoning initially sounds pragmatic: modern wars are becoming ever faster, drone swarms and AI systems can make decisions within seconds, while human commanders might react too slowly.

But this is precisely where the real controversy begins.

Who bears the responsibility?

As soon as a machine selects and attacks targets on its own, a problem arises that no one has yet convincingly solved: Who bears the responsibility if AI selects the wrong target? Who is liable if civilians are killed? Who will be held accountable if an algorithm makes a wrong decision due to faulty data or electronic malfunctions?

Critics warn that with every step towards autonomous warfare, the line between human responsibility and machine decision-making becomes increasingly blurred.

The end of a promise?

The timing of the debate is particularly noteworthy.

As recently as 2024, the British government stated to the United Nations that Britain did not possess fully autonomous weapons systems and had no intention of developing such systems. No state should use weapons capable of making lethal decisions without adequate human oversight.

Just two years later, this very position is put up for discussion again.

Critics argue that this demonstrates how quickly ethical principles can give way to geopolitical and military interests.

The global AI upgrade

Great Britain is not alone in this development.

The war in Ukraine, the rapid development of autonomous drones, and the technological race between major powers have increased the pressure on Western militaries. More and more states are investing in systems that can operate with minimal human intervention.

What was once considered science fiction is gradually becoming military reality.

The real question

The debate about autonomous weapons is ultimately not a technical question.

It’s a moral question. Should a machine ever be given the authority to decide independently who lives and who dies?

Britain is no longer discussing this possibility theoretically. The discussion is already taking place at the highest levels of the defence apparatus.

And that is precisely why the current debate could have significance far beyond the British Isles. Because if a NATO power removes people from the decision-making process, this could set a precedent that other states might soon follow.

yogaesoteric
June 17, 2026

Just a few years ago, this idea was considered a red line in modern warfare: no computer, no algorithm, and no machine should ever be allowed to decide independently over life and death.
