However, a growing number of studies are raising the question of whether artificial sweeteners could have undesirable long-term health effects – particularly on the brain.

Study: Higher risk of dementia with regular consumption

Researchers at the University of Miami report that people who consume even one diet soft drink daily had a more than fourfold increased risk of developing dementia later in life compared to those who rarely or never drank such beverages. Furthermore, each additional diet drink per day was associated with an approximately 39 percent higher statistical risk.

Study author Hannah Gardener emphasizes, however, that it is not yet clear which ingredients might be responsible. The results show a statistical correlation, but do not prove a direct cause-and-effect relationship. Nevertheless, the researchers see a need for further investigation.

Artificial sweeteners in focus

Aspartame, sucralose, saccharin, and acesulfame are among the most commonly used artificial sweeteners. They are many times sweeter than sugar and contain hardly any calories. However, their low-calorie count does not necessarily mean they are without biological effects.

Nutritionist Mpho Tshukudu points out that artificial sweeteners alter the composition of the gut microbiome and could potentially contribute to the development of insulin resistance. Since the gut and brain are connected via the so-called gut-brain axis, changes in the gut could also affect inflammatory processes and brain function.

Indications of faster cognitive decline

Another study found that regular consumption of artificially sweetened beverages over a period of eight years was associated with a measurably faster decline in memory and cognitive performance. This, too, is a statistical correlation that warrants further research.

Criticism of the marketing of light products

For many years, light and zero-calorie drinks were advertised as a healthier alternative to sugary soft drinks. Critics point out that the long-term health effects of artificial sweeteners were insufficiently researched for a long time, while the beverage industry aggressively marketed its products.

Although numerous regulatory authorities continue to consider artificial sweeteners safe within the permitted intake levels, at the same time the number of scientific studies investigating possible long-term effects and raising new questions is growing.

What alternatives are there?

Holistic nutritionist Jaz Robbins recommends water as a primary alternative – carbonated if desired. For added flavour, lemon, cucumber, or berries can be added. Coconut water is also an option, but it contains natural sugars and should therefore be consumed in moderation.

yogaesoteric
July 22, 2026

Diet soda leads to surprising health consequences.
