Millions of people now get their information from Facebook, Instagram, X, TikTok, or YouTube. Which posts gain reach, which topics disappear, and which voices are barely visible is no longer decided by the user alone \u2013 but by the algorithm.<\/p>\n
If Brussels increasingly dictates how these algorithms should function, a power instrument of historic significance will be created.<\/p>\n
It is not the explicit prohibition that becomes the danger.<\/p>\n
But the invisible control.<\/p>\n
In the future, a post won’t need to be deleted to be ineffective. It will suffice if the algorithm barely displays it anymore. Who decides which content is considered \u201ctrustworthy<\/em>,\u201d \u201crisky<\/em>,\u201d or \u201cproblematic<\/em>\u201d? Which political views are favoured \u2013 and which are gradually pushed out of public awareness?<\/p>\n This is precisely where the real debate begins.<\/p>\n For years, the European Union has been gradually expanding its digital regulation: Digital Services Act<\/em>, Digital Markets Act<\/em>, AI law, chat control, digital identity \u2013 and now the ever-increasing influence on recommendation systems of virtual communication networks.<\/p>\n Each measure is justified by a good purpose: security, protection from hatred, disinformation, extremism or manipulation.<\/p>\n But taken together, this creates a system in which more and more areas of digital communication are falling under state influence. The real goal no longer seems to be solely combating illegal content. It is increasingly about shaping the flow of information itself.<\/p>\n Critics therefore warn of a development in which citizens no longer decide which information reaches them, but rather political and regulatory requirements determine the framework of what becomes visible at all.<\/p>\n However, a democracy thrives on the open competition of ideas \u2013 even when these are inconvenient, controversial, or critical of the government.<\/p>\n The greater the influence of government bodies on the architecture of digital platforms becomes, the greater the risk that diversity of opinion will gradually give way to a curated information landscape.<\/p>\n The real danger lies precisely in its invisibility. No books are burned. No newspapers are banned. No websites necessarily have to be shut down. It is enough that critical content receives hardly any reach.<\/p>\n When millions of people simply no longer see certain information, control no longer begins with censorship.
