There are solid, rational reasons for doing so, such as safety<\/em>,\u201d the WEF wrote.<\/p>\n<p>As part of its promotion of a new augmented and virtual reality of cybernetics and implants, the World Economic Forum (WEF) has taken a step further by advocating for microchips to be implanted in children&#8217;s brains.<\/p>\n<p>WEF <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/tdJRy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">agenda contributor<\/a> Kathleen Phillips wrote:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Should you implant a tracking chip in your child? There are solid, rational reasons for doing so, such as safety. Many children with attention deficit disorder struggle in school. At best, they receive special education support or classroom adjustments. However, with additional visual and auditory guidance that filters out excessive stimuli, an otherwise capable child can thrive in a normal school environment. And when classes are over and playtime begins, they can simply remove the aids<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Augmented reality doesn&#8217;t end there. Your phone may feel like a part of your body, but it won&#8217;t be implanted through surgery. The technology will become more integrated with the body in the form of implants, but it will also blend seamlessly into the environment \u2013 you could, for example, have sensors in a chair<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, the WEF is endorsing something that was already shown on children&#8217;s television years ago. In an episode of the hit <em>Nickelodeon<\/em> show <em>iCarly<\/em>, the group of friends got lost in Japan. The eccentric mother of one of the main characters, Freddy Benson, revealed that she had microchipped her son at a very young age because, as she exclaimed, \u201c<em>I love him<\/em>.\u201d Using a tracking device that accessed a location system called \u201c<em>Global Net<\/em>,\u201d Benson&#8217;s mother was able to locate her son and his friends.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"fitvidsignore\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-IVQPab2gt0?si=e0xQr2edyijcsZL9\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Here is what the WEF had to say in full:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSuperheroes have dominated the big and small screens for some time now, but a subtle shift is taking place. Many children expect to develop superpowers themselves.<\/p>\n<p>These expectations may sound unattainable, but we are already taking the first steps toward an augmented society. At trade fairs, augmented reality (AR) glasses are demonstrated that show technicians where a specific screw belongs. Your own phone gives you real-time information about your fitness or tells you about the latest trends.<\/p>\n<p>Augmentation can be defined as the extension of rehabilitation, where technical aids such as glasses, cochlear implants, or prostheses have been developed to restore lost or impaired function. When added to perfectly healthy persons, such technology can augment their abilities. Night vision devices, exoskeletons, and brain-computer interfaces complete the picture. Augmentative technology will help at all stages of life: children in learning environments, professionals at work, and ambitious seniors. The possibilities are numerous.<\/p>\n<p>Imagine this scenario: You&#8217;re talking to someone in a noisy environment, in a bar, at a party. Although your hearing is fine, the situation makes it extremely difficult to understand the other person. Imagine if you could simply put on glasses or earplugs that provide the same sound directionality as a hearing aid.<\/p>\n<p>Or another example: Many children with attention deficit disorder struggle in school. At best, they receive special education support or accommodations to their lessons. However, with additional visual and auditory guidance that filters out excessive stimuli, an otherwise capable child can thrive in a regular school environment. And when lessons are over and playtime begins, they can simply remove the aids.<\/p>\n<p>Augmented reality doesn&#8217;t end there. Your phone might feel like a part of your body, but it won&#8217;t be implanted through surgery. The technology will connect more closely to the body in the form of implants, but it will also integrate seamlessly into the environment \u2013 for example, you could have sensors built into a chair.<\/p>\n<p>Are we moving towards a \u2018brave new world\u2019? As frightening as chip implants may sound, they are part of a natural evolution that wearables once underwent. Hearing aids and glasses no longer carry a stigma. They are accessories and even considered fashion items. Similarly, implants will become mass-produced. If that sounds unlikely, consider the alternatives we currently use. Medications often have undesirable side effects because they affect multiple biological processes simultaneously. Someone who takes medication long-term might want to try an implant that instead sends highly precise electrical or optical impulses.<\/p>\n<p>Getting an implant is obviously more invasive than putting on glasses. Generally, implants are associated with medical conditions. The extent to which a particular device becomes common depends on the technology&#8217;s functionality and how well it integrates into your body and daily lifestyle.<\/p>\n<p>Wearing the equivalent of a dog&#8217;s nose in a device like your phone or a wearable like a necklace can be handy for detecting covid-19 or food allergens. In these cases, it&#8217;s usually enough for your phone to beep when you&#8217;re near what you want to protect yourself from. There&#8217;s no immediate reason to implant this extra sense into your body. However, a potentially fatal peanut allergy might justify a more permanent solution.<\/p>\n<p>Brain implants take us a step further, allowing us to directly access the body&#8217;s \u2018operating system.\u2019 We have already begun communicating with the brain via neural probes to alleviate symptoms of epilepsy, Parkinson&#8217;s disease, or depression. Most applications will continue to be based on medical necessity, not on mind-reading tools. While it&#8217;s true that companies like Neuralink have targeted the brain from the outset, brain implants may not be the first choice in our expanded society.<\/p>\n<p>An essential wearable device could be implanted under the skin as a first step, or, if necessary, in the abdomen. For example, a small stimulation device placed in the pelvic area offers a more elegant and comfortable solution for patients suffering from urinary incontinence than wearing incontinence pads. Next, other implants could be developed that influence the nerves of the peripheral nervous system or the information pathways that connect the spinal cord and brain to organs and limbs.<\/p>\n<p>Electrical stimulation of the vagus nerve, the highway that originates in the brain, is considered a miracle cure for treatment-resistant depression, a constantly growing problem. Even in educational and professional settings, smart glasses, phones, wristbands, and similar devices are commonplace. Gaming is the next target. The question is whether implants will undergo a similar evolution. Health? Plausible. Education and career? Potentially.<\/p>\n<p>We might want to open up new opportunities for children with dyslexia through implants that translate in real time. On the other hand, dyslexia is a personal characteristic. Do we want to modify that? As a society, we have to make a choice: Do we want to accept human limitations related to learning or aging? The latest applications, gaming and even intelligence enhancement, may seem far-fetched, but only the future will tell.<\/p>\n<p>If the thought of a chip in your body makes you uneasy, consider all the medications you take without hesitation. The art installation \u201c<em>Cradle to Grave<\/em>\u201d at the British Museum visually confronts us with our pill-consuming habits. It features a 13-meter-long piece of fabric interwoven with 14,000 pills \u2013 the estimated average number prescribed to a Briton in their lifetime. By contrast, around 65% of American children and teenagers with ADHD are prescribed stimulant medication.<\/p>\n<p>We often forget that these medications are related to amphetamines. They affect the brain and have (long-term) side effects. We could consider \u2018electroceuticals\u2019 \u2013 small implants that alleviate symptoms of various conditions by emitting small electrical impulses. A compelling argument for bioelectronic medicine is that the impulses can be stopped with a finger switch, whereas the effects of conventional drugs remain in the body longer.<\/p>\n<p>The limits for implants will be set more by ethical arguments than by scientific capabilities. For example, should you implant a tracking chip in your child? There are sound, rational reasons for doing so, such as safety. But would you actually do it? Is that going too far? Another crucial element is security. Remember when former US Vice President Dick Cheney&#8217;s pacemaker was modified to prevent hacking? Even with life-saving technologies, proper ethical counselling and legal frameworks are essential.<\/p>\n<p>Ethics should not be preached from an academic ivory tower. Rather, higher-level or independent institutions should guide political decision-makers and researchers in augmented society on dos and don&#8217;ts, and help build the ethical framework for the societal aspects of augmented reality technology.<\/p>\n<p>The Council of Europe recently launched a strategic action plan addressing issues raised by the application of neurotechnologies. Another example: The Rathenau Institute, established by the Dutch government, operates as an independent institution that reflects on issues related to the impact of technology on our lives.<\/p>\n<p>Chile is already a step ahead. Last year, the country pioneered a constitutional amendment to protect personal brain data. Several countries are now examining how to address these issues surrounding (brain) implants. The task is enormous, as ethicists will have to scrutinize not only the burgeoning technology but also potential future applications.<\/p>\n<p>With the right support, vision, and boldness, these transformative technologies \u2013 which go beyond augmentation \u2013 will become possible. When do we enter the grey area? Ethics will guide us. The technology optimists are demonstrating what is possible with augmented reality. Technology has always had the potential to transform society and improve our daily and professional lives. This is also true for augmentation technology. It goes hand in hand with a shift from healthcare to wellness care, where it&#8217;s no longer just about correcting an ailment.
