That is why we need adequate training for a period of time, which varies from person to person.

All great sages have urged spiritual aspirants to practice “carpe diem” daily. To psychically recall the events of the day and check whether they lived them according to the principles of higher ethics.

The practice involves a certain wise inner distancing, which makes it possible to constantly manifest a state of detachment from the small unpleasantness of the day and generate a true constant attention to pleasant facts.

The Italian psychiatrist Giovanni Fiava teaches his patients a similar technique, which he called the “Happiness Journal”. His method involves writing down on paper all the good moments of the day so that, ultimately, the practitioner can abandon ideas that are false and harmful for his psychological well-being, expressed through the idea of “everything is going well.”

Happiness in Seven Steps

We propose a simple exercise, based on the ideas stated, made up of several steps with the help of which we can awaken step by step a vivid and meaningful perception of the present. We will call this practical method “Carpe diem method”, which involves living fully in the present moment.

Step 1

We will start by getting a paper or a notebook that we like very much, and the simple idea of writing in it should awaken great joy in us. The action of choosing this physical object that we like is effectively part of the process of generating the state of happiness that will manifest itself later, as we implement the practical method and as we use it.

Step 2

We set a certain time frame, which we will not modify for a long period of time, to take notes in our notebook, in which we like to write. We prepare a glass of fruit juice every morning after breakfast or in the evening after dinner, and we prepare to write in our chosen notebook, sitting comfortably in a place that gives us a pleasant state of relaxation.

Step 3

When we decide to write, we will set the intention not to select our ideas in advance according to certain predetermined criteria. We systematically write down in the chosen notebook everything that has brought us contentment, joy or satisfaction in the last 24 hours, no matter how insignificant the facts that have occurred may seem.

We will also not be discouraged if in the first few days we do not know what to write. We will find that, as we practice, it will be increasingly easier for us to express in writing and to describe succinctly and expressively all the small details that bring us joy and contentment during a day.

Step 4

As we become familiar with the good habit of noting what we have found to be good and beautiful in our lives, we continue by adding, of course, if we wish, some newspaper clippings, some photographs, some quotes from famous authors, even movie tickets or anything related to certain happy events that occurred that day. We can also add short subjective, plastic impressions, which express the pleasant way in which we felt the event we are recording.

Step 5

We then assign each entry a score from 1 to 10. We do this for each of the small events that we have noted down daily and that have brought us greater or lesser satisfaction. In this way, we learn to measure more and more precisely the intensity with which the sublime energy of happiness, which exists in the entire Manifestation and is now accessible to us, to a certain extent, in our good moments, manifests itself in our being, in various situations.

Step 6

At the end of each period of time that we have chosen, a month, for example, we will take an honest assessment, objectively rereading the pages of the month that has just ended. The retrospective we then do will allow us to realize that our life is not at all frustrating.

Once we have made such an assessment, we can naturally ask ourselves: “Why should I keep harboring harmful, destructive ideas in my consciousness, when in reality the degree of fulfilment and satisfaction of my life is much greater than I could have imagined if I had not performed this simple exercise of wise self-analysis?”

Step 7

Finally, based on the grades from 1 to 10 that we gave in stage 5 of our exercise, we will choose as a model some of the most successful happy experiences that we have noted in the notebook. We then aim to evoke powerfully those that were the most significant ones for us and we aim to become aware of the living presence of the subtle energy of happiness and the entire range of beneficial, sthenic feelings that accompany it. We also notice a considerable amplification of goodness in our being.

Filled with love, we thank God for each of the joys and for the immense happiness that He offers us through all the delightful moments in our lives, which we are now able to recognize as such and no longer ignore.

Excerpt from Wise Advice for Harmonizing Everyday Life, vol. 2, by eminent yoga teacher Gregorian Bivolaru.

yogaesoteric
October 29, 2026

The Simple and Extraordinary Method for Living Intensely and Fully in the “Here and Now”. “Carpe diem” is a famous phrase from a Latin poem written by Horace.
