Mexicos\u2019s President Andr\u00e9s Manuel L\u00f3pez Obrador suggested that politicians who impose lockdowns or curfews to limit covid-19 are acting like dictators. The comments came as L\u00f3pez Obrador once again fended off questions about why he almost never wears a face mask, saying it was a question of liberty. The Mexican leader said pandemic measures that limit people\u2019s movements are \u201cfashionable among authorities \u2026 who want to show they are heavy-handed, dictatorship<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of them are letting their authoritarian instincts show<\/em>,\u201d he said, adding \u201cthe fundamental aspect is to guarantee liberty.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

L\u00f3pez Obrador\u2019s comments came a day after the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) said that Mexico was \u201cin bad shape<\/em>\u201d with the pandemic and urged its leaders to take the coronavirus seriously. \u201cThe number of increasing cases and deaths in Mexico is very worrisome<\/em>,\u201d said the WHO director general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. \u201cWe would like to ask Mexico to be very serious<\/em>,\u201d he said. \u201cWe have said it in general, wearing a mask is important, hygiene is important and physical distancing is important and we expect leaders to be examples<\/em> \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

In his comments, it was unclear if the Mexican leader was referring to authorities in other countries, or the mainly opposition-party local leaders in Mexico. Many governments across the world have effectively implemented lockdowns or limits on when people can leave their homes, something L\u00f3pez Obrador has fiercely resisted doing, arguing some people live day-to-day on what they earn on the streets.<\/p>\n

Some local governments in Mexico have tried to use police to enforce limits on masks or movement, which resulted in scandals of abusive behavior by police. L\u00f3pez Obrador argues such measures should be voluntary. \u201cEveryone is free. Whoever wants to wear a face mask and feel safer is welcome to do so<\/em>,\u201d L\u00f3pez Obrador said.<\/p>\n

The Mexican government has gone against the grain of international anti-virus practices in two ways. It has offered modifying and contradictory advice on the utility of wearing face masks, and has described mass testing as wasteful and pointless.<\/p>\n
