<\/p>\nA history professor denounced totalitarian politicians who paint those opposing Wuhan coronavirus (Covid-19) vaccines as enemies of the state. He also outlined the process of how these politicians villainize people.<\/p>\n

Writing for the Brownstone Institute, State University of New York College at Cortland (SUNY Cortland) assistant professor Jared McBrady cited instances of prospective history teachers tackling the issue of totalitarianism in mock lessons. The SUNY Cortland<\/em> website states that McBrady\u2019s specialty is on the scholarship of teaching and learning in history, as well as the preparation of history teachers from kindergarten up to university level.<\/p>\n \u201cWhether coincidence or a reflection of the times, a good number of mock lessons this fall (2021) covered the rise of totalitarianism. The purpose of teaching on totalitarianism is to deliver a warning: Heed well the conditions that yielded totalitarianism, so you can recognize and avoid them<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n McBrady cited a passage from a textbook used in one of the lessons, one which concerned him the most. The passage said: \u201cTotalitarian leaders often create \u2018enemies of the state\u2019 to blame for<\/em> aspects that go wrong. Often, these groups are easily identified and are subjected to campaigns of terror and violence. They may be forced to live in certain areas or are subjected to rules that apply only to them.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n According to the history professor, such a process requires \u201cothering<\/em>\u201d \u2013 in which certain groups of people are marginalized as something different. Othered groups become easy scapegoats for a society\u2019s problems, McBrady added. \u201cNow, some politicians are othering the \u2018unvaccinated.\u2019 These politicians attempt to scapegoat and marginalize this minority group, despite knowing that vaccinated and unvaccinated persons alike can contract and spread Covid-19.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n Biden, Trudeau, Macron \u201cothering\u201d the unvaxxed<\/strong><\/p>\n McBrady then cited statements by the leaders of the U.S., France and Canada against their unvaccinated citizens. He pointed out that these leaders \u201cemployed several practices of othering<\/em>\u201d in the language they used.<\/p>\n First, he pointed to President Joe Biden\u2019s Sept. 9, 2021 White House press conference where he announced Covid-19 vaccine mandates. Biden took aim at what he called the \u201cpandemic of the unvaccinated<\/em>\u201d during the press briefing. He said: \u201cMany of us are frustrated with the nearly 80 million Americans who are still not vaccinated. We\u2019ve been patient, but our patience is wearing thin. And your refusal has cost all of us.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n Second, he referenced Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau\u2019s Sept. 17, 2021 interview with a Quebec talk show. He dubbed those opposed to the Covid-19 vaccine as \u201cmisogynists<\/em>\u201d and \u201cracists,<\/em>\u201d asking if Canadians would tolerate such people. \u201cThere is a small, fringe element in this country that is angry; that doesn\u2019t believe in science [and] that is lashing out with racist, misogynistic attacks. But the vast majority of Canadians are not represented by them<\/em>,\u201d Trudeau said.<\/p>\n Third, he quoted French President Emmanuel Macron\u2019s remarks in a Jan. 4, 2022 interview with the Le Parisien<\/em> newspaper. He called the \u201csmall minority<\/em>\u201d of unvaccinated French citizens as \u201cthe worst enemies of democracy<\/em>\u201d and promised to pressure them into vaccination by limiting their freedoms. Macron added: \u201cHow do we reduce that minority? We reduce it \u2013 sorry for the expression \u2013 by pissing them off even more<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n Different strategies, same goal<\/strong><\/p>\n McBrady pointed out five particular strategies in the statements that promoted \u201cothering<\/em>\u201d the unvaccinated.<\/p>\n All three used an \u201cus versus them<\/em>\u201d strategy in their wording and blamed the \u201cthem<\/em>\u201d group for the government\u2019s Covid-19 policies.<\/p>\n Biden and Macron used words to signal the \u201cus\u201d group to be angry at the othered group \u2013 with Biden expressing the frustration of many Americans and Macron wanting to enrage the unvaccinated.<\/p>\n Macron and Trudeau both used labels that devalued the unvaccinated in their statements. The French leader called them \u201cenemies of democracy<\/em>,\u201d while the Canadian leader called them \u201cracists<\/em>\u201d and \u201cmisogynists.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n Both leaders also posted questions on how to eliminate the minority<\/strong>, with Trudeau asking if Canadians would tolerate the unvaccinated and Macron asking how they would be reduced.<\/p>\n McBrady concluded by saying that his op-ed from January 10th<\/sup> serves as \u201ca warning call<\/em>\u201d for people. \u201cWe have seen these conditions before, and we have seen where they lead.
