<\/p>\nResearch has indicated that wearing Virtual Reality (VR) headsets can cause behavioral changes, balance issues, cognitive problems, eye problems (soreness, vision changes), headaches, and other discomforts. In fact, last summer Facebook recalled millions of VR face liners due to skin irritation complaints. Nevertheless, VR, AR (Augmented Reality), and now Mixed Reality (MR) headsets are increasingly being promoted and used for a variety of purposes including educational, medical, employee and military training. Given its high price tag, presumably the Army has figured out a way to make their AR headsets safe for its staff.<\/p>\n

Army\u2019s Augmented Reality Headset Program \u2018Alive and Well,\u2019 Despite Delays<\/strong><\/p>\n Army Futures Command\u2019s most high profile program is still in the works, despite delays, the Army Secretary said at a think tank event in February 2022.<\/p>\n The Integrated Visual Augmentation System (IVAS) program went from a relatively small other transaction agreement to a potentially multibillion-dollar production deal with Microsoft. The system, which has been in the works for about four years, integrates warfighting functions like radio communications and high-resolution night and thermal sensors.<\/p>\n When asked about the project at an event hosted by the Center for a New American Security, Army Secretary Christine Wormuth said that despite delays \u201cIVAS is alive and well<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n Army Delays IVAS Display Headset by a Year<\/strong><\/p>\n The Army and Microsoft are currently working through the challenges that Wormuth said involve the headset\u2019s display.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd really the challenge we\u2019re facing right now is a little bit in the visualization of the headset and\u2026 the resolution of the imaging and that\u2019s really what the delay is about<\/em>,\u201d she said, noting that the first version of IVAS may not be as \u201cstreamlined<\/em>\u201d as the Army ultimately wants but \u201cit\u2019s the alpha version and we need to start there.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n Future of AFC<\/strong><\/p>\n Wormuth said that the command is safe from major changes for now, but tweaks to Army Futures Command\u2019s structure to keep up with updated needs in the coming years is possible.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re not envisioning any major changes to Futures Command right now<\/em>,\u201d Wormuth said, adding that the organizations that handle Army modernization\u2014Futures Command, the cross functional teams, the program executive officers, and Assistant Secretary of the Army (Acquisition, Logistics and Technology)\u2014generally work well together.<\/p>\n However, the structure of the cross-functional teams, which are charged with helping craft requirements before they\u2019re transitioned to a full Army program, could see updates in future years, she said.<\/p>\n \u201cBy virtue of how AFC was stood up, the cross functional teams are there to work on development efforts before they become programs of record. So over time, years from now, we may well get to a point where we\u2019ll do some tweaking of AFC<\/em>,\u201d Wormuth said.<\/p>\n \u201cWe may not need all the cross-functional teams that we have now; we may need new cross-functional teams to work on new areas. So I can envision making some changes potentially down the road, but right now I think we have to keep the momentum going<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n Funding concerns also weigh on the Army\u2019s modernization efforts this year. Echoing concerns defense officials voiced to Congress in January, Wormuth said the lack of certainty around funding could affect planning the Army\u2019s large scale technology demonstration, Project Convergence<\/em> at Yuma Proving Ground, scheduled for the end of this year.<\/p>\n \u201cWe are going to have to make some hard choices and everything is on the table<\/em>,\u201d Wormuth said of stopgap funding.<\/p>\n Moreover, Wormuth said the goal is to keep pace with the efforts, look at each program to determine which ones can go from prototypes to programs of record, while keeping costs in check.<\/p>\n \u201cWe really have to find a way to move forward with the six modernization portfolios that we have: air and missile defense, long range fires, network, soldier lethality, and next generation vehicles.
