Peter Thiel’s fellow in the spotlight: They “seeded” clouds in Texas, two days before the deadly floods claimed over 60 lives

Cloudseeding before flooding in Texas? Startup Rainmaker under scrutiny

In early July 2025, Texas was hit by severe flooding. Two days earlier, the company Rainmaker, founded by 25-year-old Augustus Doricko, was active over precisely these Texas regions – with the stated goal of weather manipulation through cloud seeding. Doricko is a former recipient of the Thiel Fellowship, a support program for young entrepreneurs under the age of 23 founded by Peter Thiel.

Rainmaker publicly advertises with the slogan “Stewarding The Natural World.” Celia Farber emphasizes in an article that Doricko takes a libertarian stance and opposes regulations – particularly when it comes to his desire to “play” with rain.

The article references Rainmaker’s virtual communication posts proudly documenting the company’s activities. It also points to the “blue rain” phenomenon in Texas, which is said to cause nausea and hallucinations when ingested. Whether this phenomenon is related to Rainmaker’s activities remains open.

Celia Farber paints a picture of a young, eccentric entrepreneur who publicly uses mocking religious symbolism – for example, a sign on the wall that reads “Jesus died for our Zyns,” where “Zyns” stands for nicotine pouches.

The article ends with reader comments speculating about possible connections. One user asks, for example: “If they really did engage in seeding……. well, that’s murder.”
