The new “fact-checkers” are called AI – and they work invisibly
The old “fact-checkers” were loud, visible, and vulnerable. Their names were known, their organizations researched, and their political leanings identified. Today, this form of oversight is increasingly disappearing from public view. It is being replaced by something far more powerful: artificial intelligence.

What used to be done by a team of moderators, NGOs or “trusted partners” is now done by algorithms, language models and automated filtering systems – faster, more precise and virtually invisible. The West’s information control is becoming increasingly automated.
From overt censorship to invisible control
During the covid years, “fact-checkers” were still being used aggressively:
- Posts were tagged,
- Limited range,
- Accounts blocked,
- Content deleted.
At least back then you could tell that checks were being carried out.
Today, the same control system operates in a far more sophisticated manner:
- The modern user no longer sees any warning message.
- No visible block.
- No obvious ban.
Instead, the control works in the background:
- Through ranking systems,
- AI filter,
- Recommendation algorithms,
- Automated “Trust & Safety” models,
- Invisible prioritization systems.
The result: Certain content doesn’t disappear – it’s simply no longer seen.
Perfect censorship creates the illusion of freedom.
That is precisely where the real change lies.
The new digital control doesn’t feel like censorship.
It feels like “normal internet”.
The feed appears organic.
The trends seem spontaneous.
The search results appear neutral.
But in reality, gigantic AI systems are making the decisions today:
- which topics become visible,
- which opinions gain traction,
- which narratives are reinforced,
- and which are slowly being algorithmically stifled.
And because there is no longer any visible overt oppression, the impression of complete freedom is created.
This makes this form of control more dangerous than traditional censorship.
AI can control mass opinions like never before.
A human fact-checking team was limited.
An AI is not.

Analysing modern systems:
- Language,
- Emotions,
- Political patterns,
- Networks,
- Behavioural profiles,
- Psychological reactions
- Viral dynamics in real time.
The machines not only recognize what is said – but also:
- how dangerous a narrative could become,
- how quickly it spreads,
- which groups react to this
- and how to limit its reach.
This fundamentally changes the logic of control.
No longer: “This post violates the rules.”
Rather: “This narrative could become problematic.”
The infrastructure of the digital surveillance state is already being created.
In parallel, the following merge:
- AI,
- big data,
- virtual communication networks,
- government agencies,
- security apparatus
- and private data companies are increasingly interconnected.
Companies like Palantir are already working with gigantic data platforms, real-time analytics, and behavioural models. At the same time, governments worldwide are investing billions in AI-powered “disinformation campaigns,” digital identity systems, and automated risk analyses.
Officially, all of this is going on:
- against “hate speech”,
- against “extremism”,
- against “fake news”,
- against “foreign influence”.
However, these same tools can easily be used against political dissidents, alternative media, or unwanted social movements.
And that is precisely what is now frightening many observers.
Control becomes invisible – and therefore total.
Previous authoritarian systems operated through overt prohibitions.
The new technocratic control works differently:
It reduces reach.
It manipulates attention.
It controls perception.
The citizen is often still allowed to speak – but nobody listens to him anymore.
And that is precisely why the old world of visible “fact-checkers” is increasingly disappearing.
They are no longer needed.
The new “truth” is no longer up for debate. It is sorted algorithmically.
