Under pressure from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the Trump administration could be just days away from launching a nuclear attack on Iran.

The target would be Pickaxe Mountain in central Iran, where Israeli intelligence claims the Iranian government has resumed its uranium enrichment program. No conventional weapon in the American arsenal can penetrate 300 feet of solid granite to destroy the tunnels where the enrichment is allegedly taking place. The only military option is a nuclear strike. Netanyahu is pushing for it with all his might. “Bibi calls Trump about this every day,” says an informed observer.

Netanyahu is cornered and desperate. Following the recent election results, he cannot form a government unless Trump intervenes directly in Israeli politics and brokers an agreement with other parties that gives Netanyahu 61 seats in the Knesset. Otherwise, his time as prime minister is over, and he faces irrelevance, investigations, and possibly prison. Netanyahu needs to stay close to Trump. He needs this war.

To this end, he has exerted maximum pressure on his closest allies within the administration, including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and CENTCOM Commander Brad Cooper. Both reject a negotiated end to the war they so gravely mismanaged; both are pushing to resume large-scale combat operations. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and CIA Director John Ratcliffe also follow Netanyahu’s line, as does the leadership of the Democratic Party. At a recent meeting on the subject, former President Barack Obama stated that he rejects the peace agreement with Iran currently being drafted in Doha.

The US’s other long-standing allies in the Middle East are terrified by the prospect of another war. On September 27, Netanyahu secretly flew to Abu Dhabi to try to win over the United Arab Emirates to his lobbying campaign for a final attack on Iran. The Emiratis refused. After eight months of conflict, the economies of the Gulf states are on the brink of collapse. The same is true for the global energy and fertilizer markets. They will not recover quickly.

There are approximately 850 super-tankers worldwide used to transport oil from producing countries to the rest of the world. In October alone, eleven of them were severely damaged in the Strait of Hormuz. At this rate, a global depression is imminent. A nuclear attack would radically accelerate the destruction. The radioactive fallout from a ground explosion at Pickaxe Mountain would contaminate the Persian Gulf and poison the water supply of 100 million people.

And these are just some of the immediate consequences for the region. The rest of the world is equally at risk. No other country besides the United States has ever used a nuclear weapon in war. Some would like to. An American nuclear attack on Iran would set a new precedent. The Russians have already informed at least two other governments that an American nuclear attack on Iran would give them free rein to use nuclear weapons against Ukraine. Pakistan and India would be tempted to do the same to each other, as would North Korea to Seoul. After the first nuclear attack, World War III would be inevitable. This war would be short and final.

For months we have been sleepwalking toward this moment. Since February, the administration has quietly rewritten America’s nuclear doctrine to facilitate and thus increase the likelihood of the first use of so-called “battlefield nuclear weapons.” No one in Washington, in either party, seems bothered by this. Now we are on the verge of it.

Attentive observers say Trump will likely decide by the weekend whether or not to use nuclear weapons. That would be November 7th. To his credit, he is hesitating. At the moment, Trump is listening to his Vice President JD Vance and his envoy and friend Steve Witkoff, both of whom argue that an agreement with Iran is possible.

You are right, even if it won’t be easy. The Iranians are notoriously frustrating negotiating partners under all circumstances, and parts of this government have become further radicalized since Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and his family were killed in February. After decades of isolation, even relatively moderate Iranian politicians seem confused about how decisions are made in the West. For example, the view that the United States government controls Israel is widespread in Tehran.

Overall, however, people who have spoken to decision-makers in Iran say that there is a consensus that another war would be bad for everyone and that an agreement is worthwhile.

One group that has not yet been consulted is the world population – the hundreds of millions of people who would be killed along with their children if Trump is pressured by Netanyahu to launch a nuclear attack next week.

Now would be the time for her [the worldwide population] to raise her voice.
