Ayurveda – The Science of Life



What is Ayurveda?

  • Ayurveda is “the science of life”: the Sanskrit word Ayurveda comes from joining the words AYUS (which means “life”) and VEDA (which means “science” or “knowledge”).
  • although often identified with “Indian medicine”, Ayurveda is much more than just a branch or a field of medicine.
  • Ayurveda represents “Indian traditional knowledge about life” and it is a vast treasury of wise knowledge upon life.

The main purposes of Ayurveda

  • maintaining man’s state of health and harmony
  • natural healing of disturbances and diseases
  • the possibility of the human being to live a long, healthy and happy life

Ayurvedic field of operation

  • outlining natural ways that favour the well-being of the human being
  • specifying the factors that tend to disturb life’s quality
  • way of evaluating the proportions between the favourable and the unfavourable factors for health and well-being

Ayurveda – holistic science

  • Ayurveda studies, establishes, diagnoses and treats the human being as a whole.
  • man is in a constant interrelation with his surrounding environment.
  • ayurvedic examination is based on the Microcosm – Macrocosm relationship.

The most important practical methods from Ayurveda

  • use of natural food, specific to the constitutional type
  • wise use of medicinal plants
  • periodic use of Ayurvedic methods for purifying the body
  • suitable use of colours for balancing and elevating the being
  • use of natural sounds and beneficial music
  • proper usage of natural pleasant perfumes
  • performance of yoga postures for re-establishing balance and energetic harmony of the being
  • periodical application of therapeutic massage and acupressure
  • usage of beneficial suggestions and other methods for elevating the psyche
  • adopting and maintaining a wise life style
  • constant practice of profound meditation and prayer to God, which allow rapid elevation and profound balance of the human being
