Iran addresses the Americans directly: IRGC publishes open letter to the US population

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has taken an unusual step: Instead of appealing to the US government, they have addressed a lengthy open letter directly to the American people. The letter was presented on September 29 in Tehran by IRGC spokesman Brigadier General Hossein Mohebbi. Press TV reports that the document is 25 pages long.

The letter is explicitly addressed to the “honourable people of the United States,” including academics, students, and media representatives. Its central message is that, according to the IRGC, Americans should question what their own government tells them about the war against Iran, the Iranian nuclear program, Israel, and the situation in the Strait of Hormuz.

It is noteworthy that Mehr News has now published large portions of the letter in its English text. In it, the IRGC makes far-reaching claims about the course of the war and American losses, which have not been independently verified and must therefore be understood as representing the Iranian side.

The most important messages of the open letter

1. “Why is the world burning your flag?”
   The IRGC is urging Americans to ask themselves why the US faces rejection in so many countries. Mohebbi attributes this to decades of US wars and support for Israel. Military interventions, he argues, have brought Americans neither security nor prosperity, but rather debt, hostility, and additional dangers.
2. The IRGC declares Iran the victor of the war.
   The letter argues that Washington and Israel failed to achieve their original objectives – which, according to Iran, included regime change and the destruction of Iran. The IRGC therefore claims that Iran won the war strategically. The figures provided regarding destroyed US aircraft, drones, bases, and other military losses originate from the IRGC and have not been independently verified.
3. Trump is accused of deceiving the American people.
   Mohebbi called Trump a “big liar.” According to the IRGC, the US government knows that Iran is not pursuing nuclear weapons. The nuclear dispute is merely a pretext; Washington’s real aim is to control Iran’s geopolitical position and influence. Reuters documents these statements without endorsing them.
4. The Strait of Hormuz is by no means back under American control.
   The IRGC contradicts Washington’s claim that the US has largely broken Iran’s control over the strategic waterway. The fact that certain tankers can pass through with considerable military effort does not mean that Hormuz is fully open again, Mohebbi explained. However, independent data shows that oil shipments have now risen again to almost ten million barrels per day – about half of the pre-war level.
5. Americans should distance themselves from Israeli policies.
   A central part of the letter deals with the relationship between Washington and Israel. The IRGC claims that the American people are paying financially and politically for policies that primarily benefit Israel and the US arms industry. The message is: Americans could live peacefully with Iran if the US distanced itself from Israel.
6. The IRGC criticizes the global US military presence.
   Mohebbi points to hundreds of American military bases worldwide and a US defence budget of approximately $1.1 trillion. According to him, arms manufacturers and wealthy interest groups primarily benefit from this, while the American people foot the bill.
7. A direct appeal to the American people.
   Mohebbi goes particularly far in his statements to the AP: Americans should protest against what he calls Trump’s warmongering policies and reconsider their political decisions. The AP points out that this message comes just weeks before the US midterm elections.
8. Washington should end the war and leave the region.
   According to Mohebbi, the conflict can only end if Washington admits defeat and withdraws. At the same time, however, talks between Iran and the US about a possible end to the war, which has now lasted seven months, continue through mediators.

An unusual step in the middle of a war

The real political dynamite lies not only in the content of the letter, but in its addressee: The Revolutionary Guards are demonstratively bypassing the US government and addressing its population directly.

Mohebbi even stated that foreign journalists should help spread the letter among Americans. Iran does not have access to the United States’ global media network and therefore chose the open letter as its means of communication.

The letter is thus simultaneously a political message, an Iranian account of the war’s progress so far, and an attempt to influence public debate within the US. The reliability of the military claims it contains remains unclear in several respects.

However, one aspect is certain: In the midst of the war, the IRGC is no longer just talking to Washington – it is aiming to talk directly to the Americans.
