Orbán warns: Ukraine war will be more brutal than expected – Hungary convenes Defence Council

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has called an emergency meeting of the National Defence Council and warned that the war in Ukraine could become “longer and more brutal” than previously thought.

In a statement posted on Facebook, Orbán stressed that recent developments on the battlefield made it clear that the conflict was becoming more acute rather than closer to a solution.

“The military actions of the past few days suggest that the war will be longer and more brutal than we expected at the beginning of the year,” Orbán said. He pointed to a growing divide between the forces committed to peace and those seeking to continue the fighting.

“We need to face reality: transatlantic unity is severely shaken. Never before has the gap been so deep between the peace-oriented forces under Trump and the political leaders in Brussels and Kyiv who want to continue the war.”

Orbán reiterated that Hungary remains neutral and committed to peace – even if this leads to growing tensions with the European Union.

“Hungary needs to remain on the side of peace, even if that means our arguments with Brussels become louder,” he declared. “We should prepare for the fact that the war, with all its security and economic consequences, will continue for a long time.”

The Prime Minister also warned that Hungary could become a target because of this position. “We should expect that Hungary will be doubly attacked – because Hungary is an ally of President Trump and stands for peace, not a continuation of the war.”

He announced that Budapest could face increasing pressure in the form of foreign intelligence operations, malicious media campaigns, and political attacks.

“We need to prepare for the continuation of intelligence operations, smear campaigns, and war propaganda against Hungary on an even greater scale.”

PM Orbán said the Defence Council had made “necessary decisions” in the interests of the country’s security. He added: “We will continue to defend Hungary’s sovereignty and the security of Hungarian families!”
