AI is now researching the blueprints of life: A discovery reveals what could be in store for humanity

Until now, many people have used artificial intelligence to write texts, search for information, or generate images. Anthropic now demonstrates a development that goes significantly further: AI is beginning to search through vast biological datasets for elements that humans don’t even know about yet.

The company had around 950 Claude AI agents simultaneously analyse genetic data. Within just 21 hours, they analysed more than 200,000 enzymes, searching for unusual patterns and correlations.

Claude stumbled upon something remarkable: A previously known enzyme repeatedly appeared together with specific DNA structures and another gene. This combination had not previously been described as a coherent biological system.

Anthropic calls it ART – Array-Associated Reverse Transcriptases.

The crucial point: No one had told Claude that it should be searching for precisely this system. The AI sifted through large amounts of data, detected an anomaly on its own, and classified it as interesting enough for scientists to subsequently examine it in the lab.

Put simply: The AI is searching for unknown tools of nature.

Human and bacterial DNA can be thought of as vast libraries containing countless biological “blueprints.” Many of these instructions remain incompletely understood by scientists.

Previously, researchers had to painstakingly search through these libraries and decide which passages might be of interest. AI can now compare millions of such pieces of information simultaneously and look for patterns that humans might miss.

That’s exactly what occurred with ART.

However, no one yet knows what this newly identified system can actually do. Anthropic has so far only been able to show that its components appear to work together, producing short RNA molecules. Whether this will one day lead to a new tool for modifying genes is completely open. Anthropic itself emphasizes that its function is not yet known.

Why this could become important for humanity

The real significance, therefore, does not necessarily lie in this one discovery. The method is crucial.

As AI systems become increasingly adept at detecting unknown biological connections, they could massively accelerate research. For example, they could search for new enzymes, identify potential active ingredients, or discover biological mechanisms that scientists have previously overlooked.

A research process that might take humans months could be reduced to days or hours, at least in certain areas.

This could have long-term implications for medicine, drug development, cancer research, genetic diseases, agriculture, and biotechnology. The ART system itself is not yet proof of this; these possibilities arise from the general ability to automatically search biological data for new correlations.

From assistant to research partner

Until now, the typical division of labour was simple: The scientist had an idea and used the computer to test it. Now this process could change.

For example, a person could simply give the AI the instruction: “Search these millions of genetic data points for something unusual.”

Hundreds or thousands of AI agents could then work simultaneously, comparing results, evaluating scientific literature, and suggesting potential new research directions. Humans would then decide which of these are worthwhile and should be tested in the laboratory.

That’s precisely why Anthropic’s experiment is remarkable: The AI no longer simply answers questions. It helps to find questions that no one had asked before.

And that is precisely where the risk lies.

Biology differs from many other AI applications in one crucial aspect: the results do not necessarily remain digital.

An AI can develop a biological idea – and this can then be implemented in the laboratory.

Today, Anthropic is focused on an unknown enzyme system. In the future, significantly more powerful systems could search for new proteins, genetic mechanisms, or ways to selectively modify organisms.

This can bring enormous advantages. However, the same technical capability also raises security concerns if AI is able to understand and potentially design increasingly complex biological systems in the future. It also means that the ability to understand and possibly change the building blocks of life is becoming increasingly automated.
